<image:title>about story remedy - Rachel is a certified poetry therapy facilitator (CAPF) and has her Masters in Literature from the University of Colorado. She completed two units of clinical pastoral education (CPE), interning at Boulder Community Hospital and Jewish Family Service, where she witnessed the spiritual healing power of words and learned how to share that with others. Rachel works in private sessions and conducts group workshops, including an ongoing “What’s Your Story?” workshop at a women’s prison; expressive writing workshops with a vets’ group; and a women’s writing group. She also worked for many years as the director and owner of a foster care agency, where she designed a bibliotherapy program for parents and children. Rachel offers a safe and supportive environment in which to explore inner conflicts and worries so you can release them, express withheld emotions, and open avenues to creativity and empowerment.</image:title>

      <image:title>workshops - “The Art of the Letter”</image:title>
<image:caption>We will explore the power of communicating via correspondence, and the expression of emotions in letters, both sent and unsent. We will read letters from multiple sources, and write letters of our own (none of which need to be sent!). This reading and writing workshop is intended to foster a sense of safety and community, and be a place to delve into feelings that we may have contained for a long time and been unable to express. Can be done via Zoom sessions for groups or individuals, or can be taken as a correspondence course over email.</image:caption>

Create a narrative based on personal experience. Work through residues of loss and grief. Write in community if taken as a group. Also offered as private correspondence course.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Counting on Community - Posters & Picket Signs…</image:title>
<image:caption>If you are comfortable going to protests, making picket signs with your children can be a creative family project. Or hang posters in your home. (Check out one of the other books we profiled this month, Rise Up! The Art of Resistance by Jo Rippon, that traces the history of protest posters). I am moved every time I see this photo from the 1968 Memphis Sanitation Strike with all the marchers carrying signs saying “I Am a Man” (the poster was used again during the Poor People’s Campaign in Washington DC, also in 1968).</image:caption>

<image:title>Between the World and Me - Coates' title is taken from a poem of the same name by Richard Wright -- a really viscerally difficult poem about lynching. I am going to post it in its entirety below. Coates publishes the first few lines as an epigraph. Reading it makes me hold my breath. And that breath-holding moment is what I think much of Between the World and Me is about.</image:title>

<image:title>We Rise, We Resist - Eleanor Tate’s piece on dark-browned skin made me think of two extraordinary Black actresses: Lupita Nyong’o, who calls “colourism the daughter of racism,” and Viola Davis, who was featured on this extraordinary cover of Vanity Fair’s July/August 2020 issue. Here is Davis’ take on the Black female experience in Hollywood.</image:title>

<image:title>A Wreath for Emmett Till - Emmett Till’s mother, Mamie Elizabeth Till-Mobley, made the brave and terrifying decision to insist upon an open casket at his funeral. She wanted the world to bear witness to the violence that had been done to her son; to allow no one to turn away. She allowed photographs to be taken of her son’s body, and then published in newspapers and in Jet Magazine.</image:title>
<image:caption>There is a short documentary, narrated by Bryan Stevenson, (author of Just Mercy, and founder of the Equal Justice Initiative), that addresses just what a significant role those photos played in the civil rights movement. (Please watch here with the guidance of your parents. The black and white photography is graphic and disturbing. And yet, it is despairing to have to note that young people today have seen one violent video after another depicting the deaths of young Black men and women in very recent times). Stevenson says that “these images made it impossible for white people to be indifferent”; that the pictures insured that “his face will be remembered.” He calls the death of Emmett Till, and the resulting press, an “organizing and galvanizing moment for this country.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>I was particularly touched by the authors’ recounting of how inspired Ginsburg was by civil rights activist Pauli Murray, and by Ginsburg’s humility in listing both Murray and Dorothy Kenyon as co-authors on her Reed v. Reed brief. I loved Ginsburg as being quoted that she was “standing on their shoulders.” What a recognition of those who came before you! Again, I admit my ignorance. I knew nothing of the extraordinary Pauli Murray before reading this book. I so want schools to re-invest in how they teach American history, and present these women as role models to their students. One of the greatest gifts of this Good Trouble For Kids project is how much I am learning as I do research for these write-ups.</image:caption>

<image:title>Punching the Air - There is story after story of incarcerated men and women realizing that their bodies may be locked up behind walls, but they have the opportunity to free their minds through knowledge, and to transmit their knowledge through writing. Malcolm X’s autobiography is an obvious choice when contemplating this, but there are so many others, like George Jackson’s Soledad Brother; Eldridge Cleaver’s Soul on Ice (reviewed by the Harvard Crimson), which made the New York Times top 10 list in 1968; and Martin Luther King’s Letter from Birmingham Jail, for starters. The women at DWCF read more than anyone I know on the outside. They introduced me to an array of authors I might not ever have encountered without their recommendation. I think perhaps most of Reginald Dwayne Betts, who, like Amal, also spent time in prison, but for a crime he admits committing: a carjacking at 16 that led to 9 years in an adult facility. Reginald Dwayne Betts was literally saved by books and poetry, much like Amal was saved by art and poetry. Once Betts was released from prison, he got a college degree, a Master in Fine Arts, a Yale law degree, and became an acclaimed poet. I highly recommend his most recent book, Felon. In October 2020, Betts wrote this powerful piece in the New York Times Magazine, called “Kamala Harris, Mass Incarceration and Me.”</image:title>

<image:title>Hip Hop Speaks to Children - Writing Exercise.</image:title>
<image:caption>Jamaican-British poet, James Berry, was part of the Windrush Generation who moved to the United Kingdom from the Carribean between 1948-1971. I love the sound of his voice, of his patois. I love that he liked making poems out of “every day music.” The Children’s Poetry Archive has some recordings of his poems that would be wonderful to share with your children. I particularly liked listening to his recitation of “Seashell.” Turn on a recording of the sea, give your children a seashell to hold in their hands, and then ask them to write their own poem about the sea or a shell, perhaps to the background sound of a recording of waves. Have them recite it aloud to you.</image:caption>

<image:title>Hip Hop Speaks to Children - Writing Exercise.</image:title>
<image:caption>Gwendolyn Brook’s poem “Aloneness” distinguishes between the feeling of being lonely and being alone. Other poems tap into what it is to feel joy or sadness. Writing about what you’re feeling can be difficult, for adults and for kids. So do something different. Make an emotion come alive. Describe what color it is, what it sounds like, whether it frightens you, or makes you feel good. Personify it. Remember the movie “Inside Out”? Do this in poetry. What does anger look like? sadness? happiness? What does it smell like? taste like? Get really creative.</image:caption>

Baldwin’s children aren’t depicted as innocent. They know that some of their brothers “go up to the roof or they go behind the stairs and they shoot that dope in their veins and they come out and sit on the stoop and look like they gone to sleep” (22). There is a deep sadness in their growing awareness of the lure of drugs, even with all they don’t fully understand. And there are echoes of Baldwin’s perfect short story, “Sonny’s Blues” (1957).</image:title>

<image:title>The Fire Next Time - Back in April 2020, when we were just at the start of this year of the plague, I posted a poem by Baldwin in my Story Remedy Facebook Group. It is one that touches me more deeply every time I read it, and it is the kind of prayer I most understand.</image:title>
<image:caption>Untitled Lord, when you send the rain, think about it, please, a little? Do not get carried away by the sound of falling water, the marvelous light on the falling water. I am beneath that water. It falls with great force and the light Blinds me to the light.</image:caption>

You have no identity anymore and not only that but you’re in a camp with 7-, 8-, 9-, 10,000 other people who are undergoing the same grief, the same loss, the same anger, the same denial, the same depression.” —Lawrence Matsuda</image:title>
